Rent a Council garage

Update August 2026

There is currently a pause on letting vacant garages so that the condition of the garages can be assessed. A stock condition survey has been carried out and the results will be analysed to enable us to fully understand the condition of the stock and to inform the future plan for these assets. At a high level, we know that the condition of the garages is variable with some in very poor condition and would require significant investment, or are beyond repair.

This information will be taken to develop a citywide plan for the garages, which is expected to include options including redevelopment for residential use, repair (if required) to allow lease arrangements to continue or commence, disposal or demolition.

This work is expected to begin in the autumn.

Updates will be provided here as further information becomes available.

Tenancy conditions

If you rent a garage from us, you must not

  • annoy neighbours or cause a disturbance
  • sub-let to another person
  • block other people’s access to their garages
  • park caravans or commercial vehicles on garage sites
  • keep inflammable or toxic materials in your garage.

Cost

Rent is paid annually however arrangements can be made to pay in instalments.

VAT is paid on garages for all non-Council tenants and additional garages if more than one garage is let by Council tenants.

Rent charges vary across the city. We’ll let you know the quarterly annual cost prior to you signing a tenancy agreement.
