Join the library online or in person at any library.

Join in person at the library

Bring proof of identity when applying for membership at the library. 

Please also bring proof of your EH postcode address for eligibility of access to Libby, our ebook, audiobook and magazine service. 

Acceptable forms of identity are 

  • passport
  • photo driving licence
  • national identity card
  • National Entitlement Card
  • Young Scot card
  • university or college ID
  • National Library of Scotland membership card
  • City of ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Council staff ID
  • Council Tax bill (current)
  • bank statement (dated within last 3 months)
  • utilities bill (dated within last 3 months).

Online applications for those aged 16 years or above

When you join online you will receive a temporary library number and PIN allowing you to borrow up to 3 books straight away. This number will be valid for 6 months.  

For full membership, exchange your temporary library number for a library card at your local library. Remember to bring proof of identity and proof of your EH postcode address with you. 

If you only require access to online library services, once you have completed your application, contact informationdigital@edinburgh.gov.uk providing your temporary number and a library card will be posted out to you.

Online applications for those under 16 years of age

New members under 16 years should join in person at any library. 

However, if you are keen to register your baby or child before you can visit the library or only require online access to library services, you can apply online.
